Darna Zaroori Hai (2006)

Truly horrifying, just not in the way it was intended to be. I was laughing at most of the "scary sequences", and there was only one scene where I felt really spooked out. Otherwise, just pathetic, especially if one considers the potential that it had to be a semi-masterpiece. Most of the actors are under-utilised (Riteish Deshmukh and Amitabh Bacchan, for example), if not completely unutilised (Sonali Kulkarni!!! UGH), and that is the real tragedy operating at the core of this movie.

The Arjun Rampal bit was so lame- anyone who's watched Darna Mana Hai would have known right away how it's going to end. The Suniel Shetty-Rajpal Yadav story looked promising, but suffered from an absence of the scary element right at the end. The first story, which was directed by Ramu himself, finished so abruptly that one didn't even have the time to react to what just happened. I could go on and on, but it's just not worth it. This movie was B A D, plain and simple, and there is really nothing more one can add to that.

Also, I zoned out massively while watching this movie. So not a good sign, especially when the title itself says that it's necessary to be scared, but you can't really be scared when your engagement with the movie is zero, can you?

I will say one thing however- the use of meta jokes in the beginning was fun, and me zoning out gave me an opportunity to quote Alex Turner, which is always appreciated (yes, life really is that non-happening right now). Also, completely unrelated to everything, but Dulquer Salmaan and Tabu should do a movie as the romantic leads. It's what Indian cinema needs. Not deserves, for sure, but needs, definitely. Please someone make it happen, I am begging!!!
