Happy (2006)

Andhra (undivided), you know ily, but the fact that you let this movie flop is unacceptable. Thank god for Mallu Arjun stans for saving the day.

More than anything, Happy is such a good story, full of hope and #feminism. I loved the two protagonists, Bunny (Stylish Star Allu Arjun) and Madhumati (Genelia D'Souza) and I just wanted them to be... happy. I also loved Manoj Bajpayee's character, uff. Indian cinema has under-utilised his comedy skills, and it's a complete disgrace. Someone give my man more funny roles!! His lowkey bromance with Bunny was definitely a highlight for me, and I would have loved it if they had elaborated more on this. Also, Manoj's vehicle's number plate said 666. Subtle. And before I forget, I very much appreciate the dubbing artist they got for him.

My most recurring thought while watching the movie, though, was- Abolish Indian Upper-Caste Fathers. Genelia's politician fother was all too real, and unfortunately, quite triggering. I had a massive headache by the time I was done (the ending made it loads better though) because the useless casteist bullshit just doesn't stop. Kudos to the movie for being so accurate and thorough in its representation of what upper-caste fathers. The opposite of kudos to us as a society for not managing to annihilate caste yet. I must add that woke queen Madhumati standing up to her father was one of my favourite cinematic moments ever. The way she prioritises her education is the best message this movie could have given, along with #annihilatecaste. Also, as much as I hated the party scene (BUNNY DID NOT DESERVE), I have no choice but to respect Madhu, especially since she is an Indian movie heroine. Moreover. Genelia does a great job at bringing out the inner conflicts and emotional turmoil of the character. Stanning all the way.

Stylish Star Allu Arjun not only brings in the style (duh), but also a truckload of good comedy that balances out the disgusting severity of the caste issue. His scenes with Brahmanandam are the BEST, and I am laughing all over again thinking about the most hilarious one. However, it's his acting in the climax that made me have ALLLLLLL the feels. Yes, ALLLLLLL of them. It was so heart-breaking and pure that I don't know when I'll get over it. And the way he falls in love with Madhumati? CHAALA ADORABLE OMG. That one scene with where she asks him to get a lift and HE LITERALLY HAS AN OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE????? Please, this movie is one of the best love stories ever and deserves way more recognition. Someone please upload an HD version with subtitles for starters, thanks.

In conclusion, the scene where they take Madhumati's dog for a walk was super precious and you should watch the movie for that scene alone because it will melt your heart like nothing else. Also, keep up the spirit of Dr. Ambedkar and annihilate caste.

PS- Do not miss all the Pawan Kalyan references. Very subtle.
