Bommarillu (2006)

Rarely do I come across a movie that I feel is fully deserving of the hype and emotions around it. I try to keep my expectations low, but it is so nice to watch something that dares you to expect more, because there's a chance after all that all your hopes will be fulfilled. Bommarillu is thankfully one of those movies, and the fact that it stars some of my favourite people (Siddharth, Prakash Raj, and Sunil), just fills my heart with even more joy.

Even though both Sid and Genelia are adorable, it's the way the film portrays their relationships with their families that makes it so special for me, and for my friends. I found myself relating so hard to Siddhu, with Prakash reflecting both my parents somehow. I could totally understand his nervousness, his passive aggressive behaviour, his constant whining to his friends, his sense of indecisiveness, and most importantly, his breakdown in the end. All of it hit so close to home, that I was sobbing for quite some time after the film was over. I loved how the typical desi parent has been represented here- it's not an outright black or white characterisation, but its nuances are familiar enough to most of us. The film made me think of so many things that my parents have done, and right now, I just feel overwhelmed by all that I feel for them. I wish I get the chance to show them this some day, honestly. In fact, let me take it ten steps further as always, and declare that this movie should be shown to all Indian parents compulsorily.

Hasini (Genelia) tho man- THE OG MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL, and may I say, one of the best ones ever. At no point did I find her extra, or annoying, and was just rooting for her throughout, even more than I was rooting for Siddhu. All I want to do is go to Minerva and have coffee with her, and maybe jam to Appudo Ippudo with her. Speaking of which- SIDDHARTH SINGS SO WELL ARGH I have just been loving him more and more every single day for the past couple of weeks and as naive as I sound, I hope this never ends. Also, Sid and Sunil are the most iconic bffs ever, and every scene they have is pure comedy gold and I LIVE FOR IT. I know it's probably hoping for too much, considering the different paths their careers are on, but I genuinely wish that they do a proper BFF movie one of these days. Nature will heal. Also the fact that they are besties in real life??? MY HEART.

In conclusion, do yourself a favour and watch this film. It is everything I love about cinema, and more. Especially the excellent album??? Thank you DSP, indigenius max.

PS- sorry if I sound incoherent, I just have too many thoughts and emotions about this movie. Maybe I'll sound less insane after a rewatch or something.
