Rajavin Parvaiyile (1995)

I'm gonna be real: the only reason I had for watching this movie was the fact that as of now, it's the only one that has both Vijay and Ajith in it. And despite that being the "only" reason, my expectations were quite high, not gonna lie. Don't ask me why, I just love the 90s. And Vijay. And Ilaiyaraaja. And the film mostly lived up to them.

Let's start with the first of the three things I mentioned above: the 90s. This is such a typical 90s part-melodrama part-action part-romance part-bromance full-entertainment package. I knew how everything would play out 5 minutes before it did, but that has its own charm when done well. As for the second reason, I really don't think I have it in me to ever hate a Vijay performance (I feel like I've written this elsewhere too, had a very strong sense of déjà vu) (oh wow, that rhymed). But no, he just carries the movie on his beautiful shoulders so well and I enjoyed watching him immensely. Also, his chemistry with both Ajith and Indraja was spot-on; and me being me, I couldn't help notice the homoerotic subtext in his bond with Ajith. The intensity of it made the entire plot believable, and that's some king shit right there. Thalapathy maaaaasss.

Now for Ilaiyaraaja's music- I loved the songs so much, especially "Oru Sudar Iru Sudar", and the background music acted as a good tone-setter to the narrative. I heard the album by itself later too, and I'm pleased to report that it's quite jam-worthy.

In conclusion, Ajith and Vijay made an interesting pairing, and even though it's never going to happen again, I still wish they do another movie together one day. And yes, Raja was obviously in love with Chandru. DUH.
