Ko (2011)

First things first- the actress playing Renuka sucked. Big time. If they had cast anyone decent for this role (apparently this particular casting choice was influenced by nepotism, shockingly), the film would have been loads better. That being said, Ko is still one of the better thrillers to have come out of India, and is definitely worth watching.

I so did not see that #plottwist coming!! I was left shook, and also the ending... mashallah is the only appropriate word. I don't want to say anymore, coz #spoilers, but it's honest to god, so fudgin' worth it. Speaking of things that are worth it, how can I possibly not talk about the inherent homoeroticism between Ashwin and Vasanthan?

SPOILERS AHEAD. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE (IF YOU CAN).

So, my personal theory is that even though Vasanthan was already evil and twisted, his real decline begins when he sees Ashwin and Renuka getting a little too close to each other. Because of the oppressive heteronormativity, he can't even figure out why exactly he's having such a hard time dealing with his friend's newly budding romantic life. Also, the fact that they pretend not to know each other for most of the movie is subtle coding for the hidden nature of their relationship. Yes, those who want to say "lit kids" at me can very much do so, but even they must acknowledge that I'm right. Moreover, there was never really anything to suggest something between Renu and Vasanthan. Since most of the plot is told through Ashwin's eyes, we can safely assume that it was him projecting his own feelings onto Renuka. God, what a mess. And the kind of dialogues they say to each other? "Why must we die together when we can live together?" "I thought we'd be together till death." I MEAN COME ON. WAKE UP HETERONORMATIVE SHEEPLE. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GAY COFFEE.

SPOILERS END.

To conclude, I would wholeheartedly recommend this movie to fellow Indian cinema stans. Just ignore and forgive the actress playing Renuka. Oh, and Prakash Raj is also there. Him, the plot twists, and the homoeroticism more than make up for her. So, do enjoy. Khuda haafiz.
