S/O Satyamurthy (2015)

Could have been more entertaining, had it not had some of the elitist preaching. Which is a shame, because I was really looking forward to this one, especially it had Prakash Raj and Samantha Akkineni in it, along with Allu Arjun and Rajendra Prasad.

I'm sure someone has noticed this before, but I think the "morals" of Julayi (2012) and S/O Satyamurthy (2015) are very similar in the sense that they strive to maintain the status quo where the middle class man must learn to stay within his limits, while the upper class man must learn to never settle for anything less than what he is "rightfully" accustomed to. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020) is, in that sense, the most logical culmination to the Allu Arjun-Trivikram Srinivas holy trinity. Even the titles point to the progressive preachiness- Julayi is just that, an aawara, while S/O Satyamurthy takes obvious pride in the patriarchal name and origin. Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is a case in favour of genetic basis for family pride and honour, and how ultimately the family you're born into ends up determining your entire personality. This is true not just in the case of Bantu, the protagonist, but also Raj Manohar (Sushanth), the baby he is swapped with. Bantu isn't a genius simply because he's a genius; he's a genius because he was born into a particular family. Raj Manohar has no aptitude for business not because it's completely common and understandable for people to not have a "business sense", but because he was born into the family of a petty clerk. God, what a mess.

Also, I was practically incensed when they move out of their mansion into a very decent house (some would even consider it luxurious, considering this movie takes place in India) and act as if they have reached the depths of poverty. Yeah, one can suspend one's disbelief for only so long. It gets harder as Anand is paid Rs. 5 lakh for his first assignment on his first job. Okaaayy, my sympathy just literally evaporated for you lads.

I think I am ready for non-trash movies again. Rangasthalam, here I come.
