Kalyana Kacheri (1997)

I watched Kalyana Kacheri expecting a unique role for Shobana because of the synopsis (or whatever it's called) and things didn't go exactly as I was anticipating. Firstly, there was too less of her, and secondly, apart from the very first scene where the police apprehend her and Mukesh in a shady hotel, there really wasn't a lot for her to do. That first scene was hilarious, but again, too less. It's like showing a hungry person a buffet and then reminding her that she's supposed to be on a diet. Sigh. It's hard not to take personal offence at all these film-makers who didn't appreciate Shobana's talents enough. She does dance a bit in one song though, and that was another highlight.

Mukesh and Jagathy Sreekumar were genuinely funny in some scenes, and I was moderately invested in the twists and turns, but I found the climax and "explanations" a bit too rushed and unsatisfactory. I'm still not entirely sure what happened, and why it happened. A lot of it seems unnecessary, to be honest, and I wish there was a better script to do justice to the premise. Also, KPAC Lalitha didn't have a single funny scene? What kind of game were these people trying to play?

I guess the lesson to be learnt here is that for every Innale, there are five Adayalam(s). Sigh. The things we do for our faves.

Honestly, I was already prepared to love this movie, simply because it stars both Sadhana and Shashi Kapoor. Moreover, this is the only movie that they did together, so I was very excited to see this one anyway. But even with all this, I was still not prepared to find this movie as beautiful as I did. Shyam Singha Roy (2021)

There is honestly nothing more annoying than a movie that has flashes of being a good movie, but turns out to be a bad one anyway. Not only have you watched a bad film, but you have also been cheated of all hope and it's exhausting, to say the least.  Also, when this movie is a first day first show, you can't help but feel betrayed. Full "I trusted you!" moment only.  The first half was so tedious to sit through, I genuinely thought of leaving after the interval at one point. I didn't though, because Sai Pallavi only made her entry in the second half, and let's face it, she was the real reason for me to go watch it anyway. I mean, Nani was a huge pull factor too, but after Tuck Jagadish (2021) and V (2020), I was a little wary of trusting this man completely. Mandi (1983)

Trigger warning for inc*st, attempt to s*icide, and s*lf-h*rm. It's probably a "me" thing but I just found the entire experience of watching this movie "meh". I feel like it tried too much within a limited amount of time, which almost paradoxically made it feel longer than it really was, and left me with a heavy head and a weird feeling throughout the day. I don't want to sound apologetic about a "famous" movie that I didn't like, but even though I understand that there's a lot to appreciate about this movie (the most obvious being the movie's feminist core, and its complete disavowal of the typical savarna feminist who doesn't believe in intersectionality), the movie as a whole just doesn't work for me.
