Dharma Chakram (1996)

Like I've been saying for some time, movies made in 1996 are just superior and this one is not an exception to the rule. 

Dharma Chakram is easily one of the best Venky performances ever- I could not take my eyes off of him during his monologues which were delivered exceptionally well, or during the songs, where he was somehow both a cutu clown and the swoon-worthy romantic lead, or during his comedy scenes which he is always A1 at. Yes, I should have just said that I couldn't take my eyes off of him at all, but that's not enough gushing for me. Even though I watched it without subs, I didn't really feel like I was missing out on a lot, all thanks to Venkatesh being the amazing actor that he is. He has such an effortless screen presence, and I am glad that my first non-subs movie was one of his, because I feel encouraged to widen my horizons even more now. Also, shout-out to Srividya, Ramya, Prema and Girish Karnad for being fabulous too, and making this movie such a timeless masterpiece that even after 25 years it feels fresh. Another shout-out to Suresh Productions for uploading this movie in HD on YouTube, you're the real ones (just hire a subtitling team already).

My only regret is that I couldn't follow the Brahmi comedy track at all. Inshallah, by the time I rewatch it, my Telugu will be better *duayein hands emoji*

In conclusion, Venky as an angry young man is everything. Venky as anything is everything, actually, except when he does cringe like F2/3 because PLS SAAR YOU CAN DO SO MUCH MORE WHY YOU HURT US LIKE THIS?!

My only regret is that I wish I knew absolutely nothing about this movie before watching it. Shyam Singha Roy (2021)

There is honestly nothing more annoying than a movie that has flashes of being a good movie, but turns out to be a bad one anyway. Not only have you watched a bad film, but you have also been cheated of all hope and it's exhausting, to say the least.  Also, when this movie is a first day first show, you can't help but feel betrayed. Full "I trusted you!" moment only.  The first half was so tedious to sit through, I genuinely thought of leaving after the interval at one point. I didn't though, because Sai Pallavi only made her entry in the second half, and let's face it, she was the real reason for me to go watch it anyway. Pokiri (2006)

Sairam, thank god I had forgotten the "twist", despite having seen Bhai's Wanted (2009) when it came out. Not only was I majorly zoned out (so much that I don't even remember for sure if I slept for sometime in the middle) but I have also actively tried to erase all memories of it. Which is why I was shocked enough to legit scream when the big twist came along.  From what I have heard about Pokiri , it sounds like some kind of cultural reset. And going by that, I must say that it totally lived up to that hype. Prince Mahesh seems to be at the peak of his career, and it's a performance that is memorable in more ways than one- he really shines through as the cool, stylish hero who outsmarts villains and beats them up. Of course, he needs a solid story and some killer dialogues as well, both of which are amply present here.
