Theri (2016)

Just the perfect balance of wholesome and mass I needed after being scarred by a creepy film that was full of masturbation. The way Joseph/Vijay (no, he's actually called Joseph/Vijay in the film only) interacts with his daughter, and the way they call each other baby made me very soft very quick. The Vijay-Samantha romance made me feel all mushy but also made me laugh, because both of them are damn funny performers, effortlessly. And of course, the Vijay-Raadhika relationship was another highlight for me, with its wholesomeness and comedy. Yes, this "review" is pretty much an attempt to write the same thing 34 different ways, and I don't even know why. All I know is that every time I need my emotional support DILF, he is right there with everything that I need- a good laugh, a good cry, and of course, the MASSSS scenes. Very glad to have this man in my life. 

As for the politics of this movie- they're problematic (short version). Just because I'm a fan doesn't mean that I'll try to justify what I see. The film very conveniently reduces a complex systemic issue that has been plaguing society for a long time to an individual's glorification arc. That's not how we solve the problem of r*pe culture, friends. Kindly do not be influenced by a mass movie, that too with a cop as its protagonist, and inculcate its politics as your own. In conclusion, I just might learn how to whistle, so that I can be fully prepared when I go see Thalapathy65.

Honestly, I was already prepared to love this movie, simply because it stars both Sadhana and Shashi Kapoor. Moreover, this is the only movie that they did together, so I was very excited to see this one anyway. But even with all this, I was still not prepared to find this movie as beautiful as I did. Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu (1986)

Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu is, essentially, an amazing album that saw the collaboration of two geniuses (M.S. Viswanathan and Ilaiyaraaja), with a semi-engaging plot thrown in to connect the songs together. The story is as messy as they came in the 80s (just kidding, it's quite decent compared to the atrocities that were being churned out in that decade), but it holds up thanks to the music, the beauty of rural Tamil Nadu, and of course, the brilliant actors. Whatever I say about Amala's talent is less- she was given a really weird character to play here, but managed to flesh it out and make it interesting anyway?? I love my underrated queen so much, just might stanning her son too. She is so cute here, and such a good dancer, it was a treat in itself to watch her- which worked out well for me, because she is the primary reason I decided to watch it in the first place. Saajan Ki Baahon Mein (1995)

Before you, the esteemed reader, start judging me for watching a movie titled Saajan Ki Baahon Mein , I want to reassure you that I have extensively questioned myself about my choices. The only explanation I can offer you is that I am in too deep in the TCU (Tabu Cinematic Universe for the uninitiated) vortex, and that's what's leading me into these dark corners of 90s Hindi cinema. And when I say dark, I mean it. No wonder this decade, especially its first half, is widely seen as one of the lowest periods of our dear Bollywood. The only saving grace was Tabu serving lewks.
